Toyota is considering building a new compact sports car sitting before the GT86 in their model lineup. Talks happened after Akio Toyoda said that he would like to see three brothers, the Supra being the oldest, and the GT86 as the middle one.
At Tokyo Auto show in 2018, the company hinted at the production of a small and nimble sports car named the Toyota S-FR. This was a car aimed at people who want to have fun at the wheel of a rear-wheel-drive car without breaking the bank. It featured a manual gearbox and independent rear suspension.
Toyota has reportedly said that the SF-R would rival and stand against the Mazda Miata that has been dominating the market for decades due to the fact that it is so well balanced and adopted by so many people no one has really made something to truly compete against it. It would be interesting to see how Toyota cuts cost in order to stay below the GT86 entry price of $26,500. Although, if they are definitely capable of doing so, they will have the S-FR sell like hotcakes.
Before the Toyota GT86 had that name, it was called the Scion FR-S in the North American market. The FR-S stood for Front engined, Rear-drive, Sports car. The S-FR name actually keeps the same nomenclature structure as it’s the same configuration only in a smaller package.
In a world where carmakers are obsessed with horsepower ratings and all want to be the first to have a car that goes from zero to 60 in under one second, the true feeling of a fun car disappears. There is a certain power threshold where a car quits being fun and becomes something to worry about.
This threshold is met by almost any of the sports cars that are on the market today.
